Up-Cycle Your Wine Bottles

Who doesn’t love a good glass of wine after a long week? We sure do and we’ve found the perfect way to re-use and up-cycle your empty wine bottles.

This super simple DIY is the perfect way to get those bottles out of the bin and give them a second life, they have so many uses, what’s not to love!

To get started, all you’ll need is:

  • An empty wine bottle (if it had a lid, don’t worry you don’t need that anymore)

  • A glass scorer (we got ours from Bunnings)

  • A cup/mug that’s the same height as you want your bottle to end up

  • Tape (for securing the scorer)

  • Boiling/hot water

  • Ice bath/cold water

  • Sand paper (you’ll want a heavy grit to sand the finished edge)

Let’s jump right in!

First, you’ll want to secure the glass scorer on top of the cup/mug. To do this, lay it across the top and use the tape to hold it into place, we used a cross and then a few extra pieces on each end to make sure it was as secure as possible.

Now you’re ready to score the bottle! Push your empty bottle (lid removed) against the scorer and twist the bottle until you’ve scored the whole way around. Only move the bottle as this will ensure that there is an even and flat line the whole way around.

Once the bottle is scored, it’s time for the fun part, popping it apart! Alternate between hot and cold water along the scored line, rotating the bottle so it cracks evenly. After a few passes, your bottle should pop apart and you’ll have a cup!

If the edges are sharp, be sure to sand down with the heavy grit sandpaper and some water, please be cautious as this is glass and fine particles can come off if dry sanding so make sure you wet the sand paper slightly.

And there you have it! Your very own up-cycled wine bottle, perfect to use as a drinking glass, candle vessel or even for propagating your favourite plants.
